When talking about someone’s favorite music, we usually use the phrases ‘What kind of music do you like?’ or ‘What music do you listen to?’. What kind of ~ is used to ask about ‘types’ of things. Similar to the last lesson, we can respond to this question with the music genre. Here are a couple of common genres.
誰かと好きな音楽について話している時は What kind of music do you like? (どんな音楽が好きですか？) とか What music do you listen to? (どんな音楽を聴きますか？) というフレーズを使うことができます。What kind of 〜 とは「どんな〜」と言う意味で「種類」について尋ねるために使われます。前回のレッスンと同じように、この質問に答える時は音楽のジャンルに関する単語を使うことができます。

These genre nouns can be used together with ‘music’, but in daily conversation they’re often used separately.

1.) WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU LIKE?
In the previous lesson, we learned how to respond to the question ‘What kind of movies do you like?’. We can use the same phrases from that lesson, but we can change the word ‘movies’ into ‘music’. Though in daily conversation, ‘music’ is often omitted. Let’s do some conversation practice.
前回のレッスンでは、What kind of movies do you like? (どんな映画が好きですか？) という質問の答え方を学びましたね？前回のレッスンで学んだフレーズをそのまま使うことができますが、movies (映画) を music (音楽) に変えればいいです。それでも、日常会話では music が省略されることが多いです。会話の練習をしてみましょう。

2.) LISTEN VS HEAR
When talking about music, we use ‘listen’ instead of ‘hear’. The word ‘listen‘ is used when you consciously listen to something , ‘hear‘ is used when you don’t consciously hear it. Let’s take a look at an example sentence.
音楽について話す時は、hear ではなく listen を使います。listen は音を意識して聞いている時に使われ、hear は音を意識して聞いていない時に使われます。例文を見てみましょう。
- Do you listen to folk music?
フォーク音楽を聴きますか？ - Have you heard folk music before?
フォーク音楽を聞いたことがありますか？
‘listen’ is often used in the pattern ‘Do you … ?’, as listen gives the idea that the person is habitually and continuously listening. ‘hear’ is often used in the perfect tense ‘Have you …?’. ‘Have you heard’ is often used to ask about experience. In Japanese, it is ‘聞いたことがありますか？’. When we want to ask if somebody knows about a certain band or singer, we can also use the phrase ‘Have you heard of (…)?’. It means ‘Do you know … ?’.
listen とは Do you … ? というパターンでよく使われます。listen は誰かが「習慣的に、継続的に聴いている」というニュアンスを与えるからです。hear は完了形の Have you …? でよく使われます。Have you heard … ? は経験について尋ねるときによく使われます。日本語では「聞いたことがありますか？」となります。相手が特定のバンドや歌手について知っているかどうかを尋ねたいときは Have you heard of 〜 ? というフレーズを使うこともできます。
このフレーズは「〜を知っていますか？」などの意味でもよく使われます。

3.) WHAT MUSIC DO YOU LISTEN TO?
‘What music do you listen to?‘ is also a very common expression. When responding to the question ‘What music do you listen to?’, we usually use one of the following patterns.
‘What music do you listen to?‘ もよく使われる表現で「どんな音楽を聴きますか」と言う意味です。この質問に答える時は次のようなパターンを使います。
- I like to listen (ジャンル) music.
〜(の)音楽を聴くのが好きです。 - I often listen to (ジャンル) music.
～(の)音楽をよく聴きます。
