The word ‘movie‘ is used in America, but ‘film‘ is more commonly used in British English speaking countries. Now, do you remember what ‘What kind of ~‘ means? ‘kind‘ means ‘種類‘ in Japanese. Therefore, ‘What kind of ~‘ is used to ask about ‘types‘ of things. ‘What kind of movies do you like?‘ or ‘What movies do you like?‘ is used to ask about the genre of movie that someone likes, therefore when responding we can respond with the genre. First, let’s take a look at some genre vocabulary.

movie(s) は アメリカ式の英語で「映画」と言う意味ですが、イギリスでは film(s) の方が使われます。皆さんは What kind of ~ の意味と使い方を覚えてますか？kind は「種類」と言う意味なので、What kind of ~ は「どんな～・どんな種類の～・どのような～」と言う意味になります。そして、What kind of movies do you like? とか What movies do you like? は、誰かの好きな映画のジャンルについて尋ねる時に使います。ですから、答える時にジャンルにまつわる単語を使います。いくつかを見ましょう。

Some of the genre vocabulary has to be used with the noun ‘movie(s)’, but there are some exceptions, such as the word ‘comedy‘. ‘comedy‘ or ‘comedies‘ is usually used by itself. 

このジャンルの中には 名詞 movie(s) と一緒に使われる言葉が多いんですが、例外もあります。comedy/comedies・musical(s)・thriller(s)・drama(s)・documentary(ies) などは単独的に使われます。animation と cartoon は「アニメ」と言う意味で単独的に使われますが、animated movie(s) と言う表現も使われます。

1.) What kind of movies do you like?

When we want to respond to the question ‘What kind of movies do you like?‘, we can use the following patterns:

‘What kind of movies do you like?‘ という質問に答える時は次のようなパターンを使えます：

• I like (ジャンル) movies.
  私は〜の映画が好きです。
• I like to watch (ジャンル) movies.
  〜の映画を見るのが好きです。
• I often watch (ジャンル) of movies.
  ～の映画をよく見ます。

If you want to say what kind of movies you don’t like, you can use the following expressions.

好きじゃない映画や好きじゃない映画のジャンルを伝えたい時は次のような表現を使うことができます。

• I don’t like (ジャンル) movies.
  ～の映画が好きじゃないです。
• I don’t like to watch (ジャンル) movies.
  ～の映画を見るのが好きじゃないです。
• I never watch (ジャンル) of movies.
  ～の映画を(絶対に)見ません。

When you want to say that you REALLY like something or REALLY don’t like something, you can replace ‘like‘ with ‘love‘, and ‘don’t like‘ with ‘hate‘.

何かが本当に好きな場合や本当に嫌い場合には、like の代わりに love を使えるし、don’t like の代わりに hate を使えます。

• I love (ジャンル) movies.
  ～の映画が大好きです。
• I hate (ジャンル) movies.
  ～の映画が大嫌いです。

You can also use adjectives such as ‘funny‘, ‘scary‘, or ‘exciting‘ instead of the genre. The pattern is still used in the same way. Then how about we do some conversation practice?

ジャンルの代わりに funny (面白い)・scary (怖い)・exciting (はらはらする) などの形容詞を使うことができます。パターンの使い方は同じです。では、会話の練習をしましょうか？

‘I am into ~‘ is a more casual way of saying ‘I am interested in ~‘, we often use this pattern when talking about movies, music, or tv shows. The usage is the same as ‘interested in‘, at the end we can put a noun or ‘an adjective + noun‘.

I am into ~ は I am interested in のカジュアルな表現で「～に興味がある」という意味です。映画とかドラマとか音楽について話すときによく使われるカジュアルなフレーズです。

2.) Have you seen ~ ?

If you want to ask if someone saw a movie or not, you can use the present perfect tense expression ‘Have you seen ~ ?‘. If it’s a new movie that’s really popular, you can add the word ‘yet‘ at the end of the sentence. ‘Yet‘ gives the nuance that you believe the other person will see the movie in the future.

誰かが映画を見たことがあるのか尋ねてみたい場合には、現在完了形の ‘Have you seen ~ ?‘ と言うフレーズを使うことができます。新しい映画や人気のある映画なら、フレーズの後ろに yet を付けて表現できます。yet は「まだ」と言う意味ですから、Have you seen … yet? と言うフレーズは相手が未来にその映画を見るつもりだと思ってるニュアンスを持っています。

Have you seen the new Godzilla movie yet?
新しいゴジラの映画を観たの？
Not yet, I really want to.
まだね。本当に観たいよ
When are you going to see it?
いつ観る予定なの？
I’ll probably go see it next weekend.
多分来週末観に行くだろう？

Have you seen that movie before?
あの映画を観たことがあるの？
Yes! I love that movie.

Have you seen Star Wars before?

Of course, I loved Star Wars when I was a kid. What about you?
