be 動詞 + there は「～がある・～がいる」という意味でよく使われます。

• There is (単数名詞) (場所).
  ～が(～に)ある
• There are (複数名詞) (場所).
  ～が(～に)ある

There is … と There are … は「〜がある」という表現で、どこに何があること・存在を意味します。be 動詞を文の先頭に持ってくれば、疑問文になりますね。ですから「～がありますか？」を聞きたい時は Is there … ? や Are there … ? と言うパターンを使います。

まずは, There is … と There are … の使い方をお見せします。Is there … と There are … は、何か (誰か) の存在を初めて話題に上らせる時に使われます。

• There is a station.
  駅はあります。
• There is a Starbucks over there.
  あそこにはスターバックスがあります。
• There is a cat on the roof.
  屋根の上に猫が一匹いるよ
• There are parking spaces here.
  あそこには駐車スペースがあります。

Is there … ? ; Are there … ?

何か( 誰か)の存在について聞きたい時は Is there (単数名詞)? や Are there (複数形)? のパターンを使います。疑問文ですよね。答える時は Yes, there is とか No, there isn’t などの表現を使います。会話の練習をしてみましょう。

… is here ; … is there

here は「ここ」、there は「そこ・あそこ」という意味ですね。2回目に何か(誰か)を言及する時は … is here とか … is there などのパターンを使うことができます。この there は「存在」を意味する “(existential) there” ではなく、位置的な意味である “(locative) there です。そのため、… is there / … are there であれば新しい情報でなく共通認識のある名詞でも使えますね。
